Drywall Repair & Patching in Calgary

Good drywall repair starts by finding out why the surface failed, not simply filling what you can see. We repair Calgary interiors before painting, including holes, cracks, nail pops and water-stained areas, with the repair approach matched to the wall or ceiling.

How are holes, cracks and nail pops repaired?

Small picture-hook holes need a different repair from a doorknob opening or a damaged section beside a stair rail. Larger holes generally need a supported patch rather than a thick plug of filler. Loose edges and damaged facing paper must be dealt with so the repair has a stable base. Joint compound is applied and feathered into the surrounding surface, allowing drying between stages before sanding. Rushing that sequence can leave shrinkage, ridges or a patch that remains visible under paint.

Nail pops in newer Calgary homes can appear as framing dries and the building settles. The fixing and surrounding board need assessment before filling the surface. Hairline cracks may be cosmetic, but repeated, widening or displaced cracks deserve further investigation. We do not treat paint and joint compound as a structural repair. In older inner-city homes, a wall may be plaster rather than drywall, so the material and condition determine the approach instead of using the same patch method everywhere.

What has to happen before a water stain is painted?

Fix the leak first. A roof issue, plumbing leak or condensation problem needs an appropriate repair before the wall or ceiling is closed and refinished. The affected area also needs to be dry, and damaged material may need removal rather than covering. Soft board, sagging areas and suspected mould require assessment outside a routine cosmetic patch. Frank can discuss the painting scope once the source and any necessary remedial work have been addressed.

A stain-blocking primer may be needed after a suitable repair to prevent discolouration showing through the finish. Ordinary wall paint alone may not hold back a water mark. The primer choice depends on the stain and the surface, with product drying and ventilation requirements followed before coating. We also consider how much of the surrounding wall or ceiling should be painted; stopping exactly at the repaired spot can leave an obvious difference even when the original paint colour is known.

Can you match knockdown or orange-peel texture?

Knockdown and orange-peel finishes are common in Calgary homes, and both need more than filling the hole flat. Texture size, density and the existing paint build affect the blend. We assess the surrounding area before deciding how to recreate the pattern, allowing space to feather the repair into the older finish. A test area can help set expectations when the existing texture is irregular or has already been patched several times by different methods.

The aim is a repair that blends with the surrounding texture. Broad windows and low-angle lighting can reveal changes in texture that are less apparent from the doorway. Repainting a wider area may improve consistency, but paint cannot remove a physical pattern mismatch. Older textured ceilings may also require hazardous-material assessment before disturbance. If asbestos or lead is suspected, ordinary sanding or scraping should wait until the material has been assessed and an appropriate safe work plan is established.

How does repair work fit into the painting schedule?

Repair work needs time for drying, sanding, dust control and priming before finish paint. Calgary's low winter humidity can change drying behaviour, but it does not eliminate the need to follow product requirements or check the repair. Furniture and floors need protection, and the work zone should be kept clear of children and pets. We discuss access and the likely sequence before starting so a repair appointment is not mistaken for an immediate return to normal use of the room.

For a consistent result, repairs often lead into wall and ceiling painting across the affected surface. Touch-ups may show because existing paint has aged, been cleaned or developed a different sheen. Our painting preparation guide explains how to clear the work area before arrival. Frank personally quotes and oversees the job, with the extent of patching, texture work, priming and repainting stated in the written estimate so you can compare the proposed repair with what will actually be finished.

Drywall Repairs questions

The leak needs to be fixed before cosmetic repair proceeds. The area must also be dry and suitable to close or coat.

The goal is a well-blended repair, but existing texture and lighting can reveal differences. Frank will explain when a larger repaint is likely to help.

Not always; recurring cracks may indicate movement or another unresolved cause. Significant or changing cracks may need assessment before cosmetic work.

Not before considering whether hazardous materials may be present. Testing or specialist assessment may be required before the texture is disturbed.
